This Minnesota native is a fast growing tree perfect for a lakeshore, wetland or forest edge. Tall and relatively narrow, the balsam poplar has the potential to naturalize when planted in an open area. Hugely beneficial to pollinators and mammals who use the resinous buds, twigs and bark for food and shelter. The resin has medicinal qualities and is also called the Balm of Gilead.
