Norway Spruce (Picea abies)
· Mature Size: 40-60’ x 25-30’
· Light: Full sun to shade
· Soil: Adaptable, medium
· Habitat: Yard tree, woodlands
· Tolerates: Shade, deer, urban conditions
· Seasonal Interest: Dark green all winter, drooping branches, and large cones
· Wildlife Value: Provides seeds for squirrels and nesting cover for birds and small mammals
· Forester’s Note: Norway Spruce is a classic evergreen with a strong pyramidal shape and dark green needles. Its drooping lower branches - called “skirts” by Scandinavians - add elegance and charm. It’s the only spruce recommended for Minnetonka because it thrives here and resists common spruce diseases. Hardy and adaptable, it provides year-round color.
